Helpful Information

Frequently Asked Questions

Starting therapy is an important step, and it is natural to have questions. These answers can help you feel informed and confident.

Getting Started

What can I expect in the first session?

Your first session is a safe and supportive space where we will explore what brings you to therapy, discuss your goals, and begin to understand your unique experiences. You are welcome to share at your own pace, and there is no pressure to disclose more than you feel comfortable with.

Do I need a referral?

No. A referral is not required to begin therapy. You are welcome to contact us directly to get started.

Do you offer a free consultation?

Yes. We offer a complimentary 15-minute consultation to help determine whether our services are a good fit for your needs and answer any initial questions.

How do I know if therapy is right for me?

Therapy can be beneficial when you feel stuck, overwhelmed, or disconnected from yourself or others. If you are navigating a difficult transition, processing painful emotions, or looking to understand yourself more deeply, therapy provides a compassionate space to heal and grow. An initial consultation is a low-pressure way to explore whether this path feels right for you.

We also support neurodivergent clients, including people with autism, Down syndrome, or Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Care is always tailored to your individual needs and goals.

What therapy approaches do you use?

We draw from evidence-informed approaches including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), the Gottman Method, somatic and narrative therapy, trauma-informed care, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), solution-focused therapy, and attachment-based therapy. The approaches we use together will be shaped around your needs and goals.

Professional Credentials

Are you a licensed professional?

Yes. Peta-Gay is registered with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO) as a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying). Her practice follows the professional standards, ethical guidelines, and continuing competence requirements established for psychotherapy practice in Ontario.

Do you prescribe medication or provide medical diagnoses?

No. Registered Psychotherapists do not prescribe medication or provide medical diagnoses. Our focus is on therapeutic conversation, emotional healing, and behavioural support. If you need a medical diagnosis or medication evaluation, we can discuss connecting with a family doctor or psychiatrist alongside your therapy.

Fees & Insurance

What are your fees?

Individual sessions are $155, couples sessions are $195, and family sessions are $225. Sliding-scale appointments may be available from $90–$120 for individuals, $135–$160 for couples, and $165–$190 for families.

Do you accept insurance?

Many extended health benefit plans provide coverage for psychotherapy services. We recommend checking with your insurer to confirm your specific coverage and reimbursement requirements. We can submit on behalf of Sun Life clients when eligible, and all clients receive receipts containing the information needed to request reimbursement.

What forms of payment do you accept?

We accept e-transfer and major credit cards.

Sessions & Policies

Are sessions in-person or virtual?

We offer in-person, virtual, telephone, and walk-and-talk sessions so you can choose the format that best fits your preferences and needs.

What is your cancellation policy?

We require at least 24 hours’ notice for cancellations or rescheduling. Appointments cancelled with less than 24 hours’ notice are subject to a $90 cancellation fee. Missed appointments are charged at the full session fee.

How many sessions will I need?

The number of sessions varies depending on your circumstances, goals, and history. Some clients experience meaningful insight and relief within 6 to 12 sessions, while others benefit from longer-term support or need fewer sessions. We will check in regularly to evaluate progress and ensure the pace continues to align with your goals.

Confidentiality

Is therapy confidential?

Yes. Confidentiality is a fundamental part of therapy. Information shared in sessions is kept private, with limited legal and ethical exceptions, such as circumstances involving risk of harm. These limits will be discussed with you during your first session.
